Commissary (Hong Kong, CHINA) ★★★☆☆

Behind restaurateur Yenn Wong, JIA Group continues its rapid expansion in 2016 (Rhoda, Mak Mak, Potato Head, etc.) this month. Its latest addition, Commissary recently opened in late November and aims to bring South Californian cuisine to the revamped Pacific Place just in time for the holiday season.

The bar here actually operates until midnight so in case you need a late night drink in the area, this is the place to be.

Honestly, I haven't had a lot of American food (except for burgers) since the closure of Restoration so I was eager to see what they have got for us. Unfortunately, they don't offer their regular a la carte menu during lunch service on weekends. I guess we had no choice but to settle for their brunch menu instead.

Blueberry pancakes, sea salt, honey ($98) - We can't possibly have brunch without pancakes, right? This was pretty nice and fluffy, the way good pancakes should be.

In between the layers of pancakes were some honey and blueberries. Perfect way to start the meal.

Shrimp and grits ($158) - A very traditional coastal Southern Carolina dish and one of the most popular dishes here.

On top of the rich seafood broth and creamy grits were prawns, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms and slow-cooked egg. I like the tangy seafood broth meshing well with the grits and prawns in this one.

Fish tacos, green goddess, cabbage slaw ($138) - Another pretty special dish around here. Golden battered sea bass strips were served with piles of cabbage slaw on top of flour tortillas. This was decent but not as tasty as I thought it would be and the salsa verde was a little too acidic for my liking.

Southern fried chicken sandwich and fries ($198) - The fried chicken was well-seasoned and fairly juicy but was it worth the heavy price tag? I have to say no.

Commissary's brunch menu has been a case of hit-and-miss for us. While there were enough bright spots in there (shrimps and grits and blueberry pancakes) to make this visit worthwhile, we would have trouble convincing ourselves for a second visit.
