Main Tower Restaurant & Bar (Frankfurt, GERMANY) ★☆☆☆☆

We knew we would be staying at a hotel very close to the Main Tower so finding a nice restaurant within walkable distance would be the ideal plan. And the Main Tower Restaurant and Bar seemed to be the obvious choice due to its proximity and what else, its view. Well, what a huge mistake there!

The view was as good as advertised. That was the good part. Now, here come the bad parts.

(1) We were charged a fee to take the lift. (The lift goes up to both the restaurant 53/F and rooftop viewpoint area).

At the security check counter, we already let the guards know that we had dinner reservation at the Main Restaurant & Bar so they didn't make us pay there. But when the bill came after dinner, the lift charges were found to be included in our dinner bill! Shouldn't this be included in the dinner set prices in the first place? (We thought the lift should be free for diners since the restaurant is located on 53/F. Can't expect us to walk up).

(2) There was no a la carte menu. Even the set had very limited choices.

(3) The quality of the food was consistently bad. For instance, the foie gras which was pan fried nicely to perfection, was served on a super sour apricot tart. The taste of the tart totally overpowered the natural flavours of the foie gras.

At the tail end of our trip, we visited Munich and had a nice dinner at the Michelin starred Tantris. The service was much much better and the 'total damage' was almost identical. Which brought us the question, would we pick Main Tower if we could choose all over again !? The answer is fairly obvious.

Germans are most famous for their automobile and beer. When you put those 2 together, you get this - a mobile pub!

Fantastic view of Frankfurt city from the rooftop viewpoint area.

Dining area is very small. Service was not attentive but the view couldn't be blamed.

The bar area
Amuse bouche - roasted sea eel, wild porcini soup and goat cheese (3/10).

Gazpacho with South African scampi (2/10).

Pan seared foie gras with apricot tart (2/10). Couldn't believe how sour the apricot tart tasted wasting a piece of foie gras there.
Grilled veal loin (4/10). Super rough.
